| In a post-modern world, environmental concerns have become increasingly more evident in man's endeavors upon the earth. Mankind is becoming more aware of taking care of the planet and through modern technology and human ingenuity has developed tools to help to minimize the harm to the ecosystem through the activities of man. Some of the means by which we are helping man to live in harmony with the environment is through the use of turbidity barriers, turbidity curtains and silt barriers in construction zones.
Construction projects that take place near or upon bodies of water can result in increased turbidity in and around the construction zone. This increased turbidity can cause harm to the ecosystem and disrupt the natural order within an aquatic habitat. In order to be able to undertake construction projects and preserve the aquatic environment, turbidity control devices can be implemented to lessen the negative effects that construction projects can wreak upon a body of water.
Construction sites can result in soil erosion that if left unchecked can result in increased levels of silt and sediment in adjacent aquatic bodies. Turbidity control devices such as turbidity curtains, turbidity barriers, and silt barriers when used in construction zones can act as a shield against these solid particles that can build up in a body of water due to the work being done. By controlling the turbidity levels, the negative impact on water systems can be kept to a minimum level.
Controlling turbidity is not just a good idea, it is something that is required in some areas, and regulated by certain authorities. There are regulations that are in place that have been enacted to control the turbidity levels in construction zones. There are agencies that monitor turbidity levels and also enforce the regulations concerning turbidity levels.
It may not be possible to negate all of the negative impact that man has and has had upon the planet, but through the use of tools such as turbidity curtains, turbidity barriers, and silt barriers the impact can be lessened. Our waterways are one of our most precious resources; we should use the means that we have available to protect them. |
